An Intensivist is a medical doctor who possesses special training and experience in treating critically ill patients. Less than 20 percent of hospitals in the United States have intensivist coverage. About 160,000 lives could be saved each year if critical care was delivered by intensivist-directed, multi-professional teams, according to 

An Intensivist is a medical doctor who possesses special training and experience in treating critically ill patients. Less than 20 percent of hospitals in the United States have intensivist coverage. About 160,000 lives could be saved each year if critical care was delivered by intensivist-directed, multi-professional teams, according to the Society of Critical Care Medicine.  


The mortality rate for intensive care units with intensivist staffing is 6 percent, compared to 14.4 percent where attending physicians provide ICU care.

Training Pathways

Intensivists must first complete residency training in one of several medical specialties: Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, General Sugery or Internal Medicine. After successful completion of the main specialty, further sub specialization in Critical Care Medicine is required. Thereafter, the Intensivist can sit for board examinations

After successful completion of the main specialty, further sub specialization in Critical Care Medicine is required. Thereafter, the Intensivist can sit for board examinations to achieve Critical Care board certification. This education requires 5-7 years of additional training after 4 years of medical school.

Our multidisciplinary team of physicians have attained their critical care training and maintain their board certifications in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.
